What is Ensol Edge?
ENSOL Edge is a liquid bio-stimulant designed to enhance the natural biological processes within commercial and industrial wastewater systems. It stimulates naturally occurring micro-organisms to support the breakdown of organic matter, helping reduce sulphides, associated odours and corrosion, while also supporting the biological breakdown of fats, oils and grease (F.O.G.).
ENSOL Edge supports the transition towards more effective aerobic biological activity without relying solely on mechanical aeration or physical mixing to distribute oxygen throughout the waste.
ENSOL EDGE is a pH neutral, non-biocide, non-enzyme, non-bacterial and non-volatile, translucent blue/black liquid. It is also a hydrated compound which attracts moisture allowing the bacteria to keep working, and contains a surfactant to allow it to migrate into a biomass.

How Ensol Edge Works

Wastewater treatment systems generally contain two broad biological environments:
Anaerobic - Oxygen is unavailable or severely limited. Anaerobic microbial processes can be relatively slow and may produce sulphides, ammonia and methane, along with other undesirable compounds.
Aerobic - Dissolved oxygen is available to micro-organisms. Aerobic biological processes can break down organic matter more efficiently and generally produce fewer of the undesirable compounds associated with anaerobic conditions.
ENSOL Edge supports the naturally occurring microbial population within wastewater, helping to increase biological activity and promote more effective aerobic processes.
Where dissolved oxygen is available, aerobic micro-organisms can rapidly break down organic matter. Under oxygen-limited conditions, ENSOL Edge supports microbial respiration through alternative biological pathways, helping maintain microbial activity without relying solely on mechanically transferring oxygen into the wastewater.
Wastewater Challenges
Odour and Corrosion
Sulphides can form when micro-organisms break down organic matter under oxygen-limited or anaerobic conditions. Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) is particularly associated with wastewater odour and can be released when wastewater is disturbed or becomes turbulent.
Sulphides can also contribute to the formation of sulphuric acid within wastewater systems. Over time, sulphuric acid can attack concrete and other infrastructure, contributing to corrosion and potentially serious structural damage.
ENSOL Edge stimulates naturally occurring micro-organisms and supports biological processes that help reduce the conditions in which dissolved sulphides form and accumulate. By supporting microbial activity under both oxygen-rich and oxygen-limited conditions, ENSOL Edge helps reduce sulphide-related odours and the corrosive effects associated with sulphide formation.
This supports a healthier wastewater environment while helping protect wastewater infrastructure from sulphide-related corrosion.

F.O.G.
Grease traps are designed to capture fats, oils and grease (F.O.G.), but these materials can accumulate over time and require regular removal. F.O.G. can also build up on the walls and surfaces of wastewater systems, restricting flow and reducing system efficiency.
ENSOL Edge stimulates naturally occurring micro-organisms that can break down F.O.G. through biological processes. By supporting microbial activity around accumulated F.O.G., ENSOL Edge can help accelerate its natural breakdown and reduce the build-up of fats, oils and grease on surfaces within wastewater systems.
This helps maintain better flow, reduce accumulation and support more effective wastewater treatment.

Solids
Aerobic micro-organisms can break down organic matter more efficiently than anaerobic processes under suitable conditions. However, maintaining sufficient dissolved oxygen throughout wastewater systems can be difficult, particularly where organic loading is high.
ENSOL Edge stimulates naturally occurring micro-organisms and supports microbial activity throughout the wastewater, including under oxygen-limited conditions. This helps maintain biological activity and supports the natural breakdown of organic solids.
By promoting more effective biological activity, ENSOL Edge can help reduce the accumulation of solids.
ENSOL Edge & Dissolved Oxygen (D.O.)
Oxygen has limited solubility in water, so dissolved oxygen can be rapidly depleted when large populations of oxygen-consuming microorganisms are present. This can cause biological activity to shift towards oxygen-limited and anaerobic processes.
ENSOL Edge takes a different approach to supporting microbial activity. Rather than relying solely on dissolved oxygen entering the wastewater or being introduced through mechanical aeration, ENSOL Edge supports microbial respiration through alternative biological pathways when dissolved oxygen is limited.
This helps maintain microbial activity throughout the wastewater and supports more effective biological breakdown without relying entirely on the availability of dissolved oxygen.

Composition

-
Nitrate blend: The product contains compounds which form a nitrate ion. When oxygen levels are very low, aerobic and facultative bacteria can get their oxygen from nitrate. This is not necessarily the addition of oxygen. Instead, the nitrate ions serve as an electron acceptor in the oxidation pathway of aerobic and facultative bacteria in an anaerobic environment.
-
Calcium: As well as being a source of nutrition for cell development in bacteria, the calcium ion will precipitate out calcium sulfate, lowering the concentration of the sulfate ion, depriving anaerobic bacteria of their oxidant source. Combined with a nutrient source for oxidation of facultative and aerobic bacteria, this compound plays an important role in ensuring that the aerobic bacteria out-compete the anaerobic bacteria.
-
Ammonium: The ammonium ion contributes to the rapid growth of the microbial population and can also function as an electron donor in the respiratory path of aerobic bacteria.
Compatibility
-
In the concentrated state that ENSOL is normally used, mixing it with a product that contains chlorine (such as bleach) will produce a reaction, releasing gasses that are harmful.
-
Mixing highly diluted ENSOL with disinfectants may not produce noticeable harmful gas or products. However, they will eliminate the bacteria, thereby eliminating the desirable properties of ENSOL.
Dosing
Dosing to reduce or eliminate the sulphides and sulphide production controls odour, corrosion, solids and F.O.G.
Typical dosage rates vary from 20ppm to 50ppm. This depends on variables such as the B.O.D., dissolved sulphides, H2S gas and F.O.G. levels. The initial dosage rate may need to be higher, 100ppm or more, to overcome any backlog. The rate can then be adjusted down as the system is cleaned up.

Short Term Control:
For short term odour control, the required dose needs to be enough to eliminate the existing sulphides, and therefore is generally determined by the amount of dissolved sulphides present in that biomass.
Long Term Control:
For long term odour control, an initial dose is required to eliminate the existing sulphides, and from then on the biomass is dosed to maintain the aerobic condition so that new sulphides are not produced. This rate is determined by the BOD of the biomass and in general, the length of time the aerobic state is desired.
Application
ENSOL Edge can be applied by introducing it into the flow pattern using a dosing pump to maintain a continuous dosage at the correct levels.
